"we've got to get this done." gold prices pulled back today on worries about the fiscal cliff, will the metal shine in 2013? then cuba, tonight's "market monitor" sees big opportunity on the tiny island when the embargo's lifted. thomas herzfeld, of thomas herzfled advisors joins us. that and more tonight on "n.b.r."! president obama says he's "modestly optimistic" a fiscal deal can be reached in time. he said he's instructed senator harry reid and senator mitch mcconnell to come up with a plan that can pass in congress. his brief comments a short while ago came after a white house meeting today with congressional leaders that ended with no deal. ahead of that, investors lost hope lawmakers can come together in the time remaining. in the last few minutes of trading, stocks sold off. the dow tumbled 158 points, the nasdaq lost 25, and the s&p fell over 15 points. here's darren gersh with more on the critical work that has to get done in washington this weekend. >> port: thpresident declared himself modestly optimistic congress could still reach an agreement to head off huge tax

right enough to get something done on the fiscal cliff. we saw the president this harch meet with the bipartisan leadership in congress. remember the republicans because of the intransigence we talked about their caucus sought the speaker es plan for a plan b. that weakened the republican negotiating position . and now the president has maximum leverage because the tax cuts are due to expire by the end of the year. mitch mcconnell said he was hopeful and optimistic that they could get a deal that they could pass. the reason that that could happen if mitch mcconnell lets it happen, john boehner may feel no option but to put that on the floor for pass adge whether or not most republicans are for it. that would be the realization of that -- >> wouldn't that violate the principle that would have govern the policy that nothing wowlingd pass unless the yort of the majority support it. >> it would violate the principle. some democrats think that mitch mcconnell is ready to force john boehner's hand. we know the republicans are going to lose the fight of taxes because tax rates are g

. >> thanks. >>> despite all the hand-wringing over the fiscal cliff, investors haven't melt much pain. that doesn't mean if won't get ugly on wall street if we don't have a deal soon. cnn's alison kosik looks at the consequences. >> reporter: don, with wall street focused squarely on the fiscal cliff, there is little incentive for investors to move stocks higher so stocks ended lower for the fifth session in a row friday with the dow tumbling 158 points. this slide began last week when speaker boehner was unable to bring his plan b. to a vote. that would have avoided the fiscal cliff. but he wasn't able to bring that to a vote. that made investors lose confidence, and since then, nothing really concrete has happened with the fiscal cliff to convince investors that a deal can get done. so at this point, the market doesn't really want a band-aid or so-called framework deal. in fact, one trader told me that it would almost be better if we went over the cliff, because that would give the markets some certainty. they would at least know what to expect. that is, of course, instead of a band

're not likely to feel any fall off of the cliff if they get something done in the first few days of 2013. >>> and for some, the biggest objection to the fiscal cliff is the cuts to project defense spending. they warned it's bad news for national security. peter deucey explains who mean affected. >> reporter: last friday when president obama rolled out his new plan for steering us away from the fiscal cliff, there was a word he did not say and that word was sequester. the sequester would automatically cut more than $100 billion from the budget next year, half from domestic programs and half from defense programs and now as the deadline draws close, experts are looking at the cuts from a national security standpoint and warning one final time about heir safety of the service members. >> and that is going to affect the operational force deployed in terms of its ability to maintain its equipment to quiet re-- get repair parts and that is around the world, not just in afghanistan being reduced and it would impact on the training of the force and the preparedness to conduct other operations. >

boehner's done is create a situation in which we're going to go over the fiscal cliff. but the people who want higher taxes, the democrats, they're not going to be blamed for it. after all, it was john boehner who walked away from negotiations to try plan "b" last week. then it was john boehner who planned to pass plan "b" that very same week. then it was mr. boehner who said it was up to the senate, someone else's problem. just from a pr perspective, what john boehner has done here is a debacle for the republicans. and the white house, they've just been sitting back the last week or so and letting it happen. but today, they gave us their plan going forward. you could call it deal and jam. >> i'm optimistic we may still be able to reach an agreement that could pass both houses in time. senators reid and mcconnell are working on such an agreement as we speak. but if an agreement isn't reached in time, between senator reid and senator mcconnell, than i will urge senator reid to bring to the floor a basic package for an up or down vote, one that protects the middle class from an income tax h
